Snorkeling & Water Sports

Although the Maldives are known all over the world for fantastic beaches and turquoise waters symbolizing the tropical idyll, the life of these paradise islands below the Indian Ocean's level is the main draw attracting thousands of divers from around the world. The Maldives has some good coral reefs, but the abundance of marine life across the country makes the islands the world's best scuba diving destination.

The Maldives is an exceptional experience in many ways, so here’s an overview of the diving and snorkeling options. This should be helpful to the visitor who has never dived before and has some curiosity about seeing coral and fish in tropical water. It should also help the seasoned diver to decide–first of all–whether or not Maldives is a suitable place to vacation and assuming it is, then what kind of diving holiday to plan. Much of what makes the Maldives distinctive is its geography; where the Maldives lies and what surrounds it makes the ocean here a bit different than other tropical destinations you may already be familiar with.

Dive Courses for Beginners

Finally, for those of you who have never tried diving or snorkeling before, there are many options. All resorts will be affiliated with a dive shop most of that offers free Discover Scuba Diving in the shallow lagoon. These courses take just a few minutes and give you an idea of what it’s all about. Diving courses or “Getting your PADI” takes three to four days and cost approximately $530 USD depending on where you do your diving and what shop you use. Prices are virtually the same at all the dive shops since there is so much competition here. Of course, other courses are also available in the Maldives, so ask at your local dive centre. Wreck diving is another popular sport around the world, and the Maldives has few wrecks.

We hope this little tutorial has helped you to decide whether or not you’ll be taking your next diving holiday here. If you can afford the time, we can offer some of the best diving in the world here in the Indian Ocean, with dive sites that are not as crowded as other places in the world have become. The area is famous for whale sharks, manta rays, exotic fish and some of the most beautiful and healthy hard and soft corals in the world.

Sea Explorer Maldives

The PADI and SSI affiliated dive centre has an experienced multi-national team offering numerous courses, shore, and daily boat diving. Blessed with a fantastic house reef, the island is suitable for snorkelers and divers of all abilities.

Diving is in small groups with just four divers to every instructor and experienced divers can explore the house reef independently but must be suitably qualified and complete a check dive. The majority of the boat dive sites can be reached within 45 minutes of the resort and comprise of thilas, outer reefs, island reefs, and channels. The island is located in the middle of the atoll so both sides are always accessible offering a variety of seasonal fish life.

Highlights include encounters with larger marine life including eagle rays, grey reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, giant trevally and silver-tip sharks. Mantas are present for most of the year and snorkeling trips to Hanifaru Bay are available.

It is possible to rent equipment and the dive centre has 10 and 12-litre tanks with DIN valves (adaptors available). Nitrox is complimentary for qualified divers.
